Michael,

Other Portions of the Buildi=
ng
pertains to the distance between the stairs and other portions of=
the same building. This is to prevent fire from easily spreading from one =
part of the building to another.

The phrase “For the purposes=
of this section, other portions of the building shall be treated as separa=
te buildings
” means that, when applying the regulations mentioned in=
this section (1027.5), the different parts or sections of the building are=
considered and treated as if they were individual, standalone buildings. T=
his treatment is done specifically for the purpose of determining and confo=
rming compliance with the fire separation requirements outlined in section 1023.2 (as described in section 1027=
=2E6)

1027.6 Exterior exit stairways and ramps shall be separated from the int=
erior of the building as required in Section 1023.2 (fire barrier.)

In other words, when assessing whether the exterior exit stairways and r=
amps meet the specified fire separation distances from adjacent lot lines, =
other parts of the building, and other buildings on the same lot, each port=
ion of the building is treated as if it were its own separate building. Thi=
s approach ensures that adequate fire safety measures are taken within the =
building itself and in relation to neighboring properties.

By treating different sections of the building as separate buildings for=
the purposes of this regulation, the intention is to prevent fire from eas=
ily spreading between different parts of the same building, as if they were=
entirely distinct structures. This helps to contain the potential impact o=
f a fire and enhance the overall fire safety of the building and its surrou=
ndings.

A one-hour separation shall =
suffice for and substitute the 10-feet minimum distance required by section=
1027.5.

Please, let me know if additional clarifications are needed.

Thanks!
